How To Safely Pack Your Instruments

Traveling with musical instruments can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if you’re unsure of how to properly pack your instruments. They are expensive and delicate. The last thing you want is for them to be damaged during transit from your rehearsal space. To help you prepare, we’ve put together a guide on how to safely pack your instruments for travel.

Invest in a quality case

The first step in learning how to safely pack your instrument for travel is investing in a quality case. The case should be specifically designed for your instrument and offer adequate protection from any potential bumps, drops, or temperature changes. Hardshell cases are the best option for protecting your instruments but if you have a fragile or heavy item consider purchasing a flight case.

Detach any loose parts before packing

Before packing your instrument, it’s important to detach any loose parts that may get damaged during transit. For example, if you’re traveling with a guitar, you should remove the strings, pickguard, and any other detachable parts. For wind instruments, you may need to remove the mouthpiece, while for drums, you should take off the heads.

Use plenty of padding

To protect your instrument’s fragile items from any potential damage, you’ll need to use plenty of padding. You can use bubble wrap, foam padding, or even old towels or clothing to wrap around your instrument. Pay particular attention to the corners and any protruding parts of your instrument.

Secure your instrument

Once you’ve padded your instrument, secure it inside the case. Most cases have straps or foam padding to hold your instrument in place, so make sure to use them. If your instrument is particularly heavy, you may need to use additional padding to prevent it from shifting during transit.

Label your case after packing

Finally, it’s important to label your case with your name, address, and contact information. This will help ensure that your instrument is returned to you if it gets lost or misplaced during transit. You may also want to consider adding a “fragile” label to your case to alert baggage handlers to the delicate nature of your instrument.

Learning how to safely pack your instruments for travel requires careful planning and attention to detail. By investing in a quality case, detaching any loose parts, using plenty of padding, securing your instrument inside the case, and labeling your case, you can help ensure that your instrument arrives at your rehearsal studio in the same condition as when you packed it. With these tips in mind, you can travel with confidence and peace of mind knowing that your instrument is safe and protected.
